Sowing Seeds on the Block: A Story of Unexpected Fruit

A couple of years ago, our student ministry had the incredible opportunity to host a weekly Bible study with about 100 local middle schoolers.

On day one, I wanted to see where we were starting from, so I asked a simple question: "How many of you know who the Apostle Paul was?"

Out of a room of 100 kids, only about five hands went up.

It wasn’t that these kids had rejected Jesus; they just had never been given the opportunity to know Him. For a whole year, we got to change that. Week after week, we showed up to share biblical stories and introduce them to the Gospel.

Eventually, that specific door closed... but as we recently found out, the story didn't end there.

An Unexpected Basketball Court Update

The other day, our youth minister and I were out playing basketball in the community when we ran into one of those former students from the Bible study.

It had been a while, so I just asked her straight up: "Hey, you still thinking about Jesus?"

Her face instantly lit up. She told me she had gotten a graphic novel Action Bible and was currently diving deep into studying the Ten Commandments!

I can’t even begin to tell you how proud I am of her. She is actively seeking the truth so she can make an informed, personal decision about her own faith.

The Big Takeaway for Ministry

Running into her was a powerful, needed reminder of how ministry actually works. It boils down to three simple truths:

  • Our job is to sow seeds: We are called to plant them whenever and wherever we have the opportunity.

  • Doors don't stay open forever: We don't always know how long a specific season or ministry opportunity will last.

  • Faithfulness is the goal: We are called to be obedient in the moment, trusting that by God's grace, those seeds will take root. We might not always see the harvest, but every now and then, God gives us a glimpse of the fruit.

"I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow." — 1 Corinthians 3:6
